NATURE

SURVIVAL AMIDST THE CITY

During this project, I embarked on my first journey of art through the project nature. I realised that nature is not just the living things that exists around us such as the flora and faunas, but it can also be looked through other perspective; that is personality and characteristics. Observing my own country, I am fascinated by the natives and tribes that live here in Malaysia, as they have the capability to survive in the wild without advanced technology and still live their life fully in nature.

This is an artwork of a tribe leader of the Ibans. I made it because I see the natives as the people of the nature, whereas they still use somewhat traditional methods to hunt and live one with nature in the forests. I made native tribes as the main subject of my project as I found them really connected to both the meaning of nature that I defined; that is in terms of a biological being and having character. I also used monochromatic colours and media to display the difference in times as they are seen to be primitive that most society that we know today.

Inspired by Leonid Afremov's artworks, I get to expand my understanding of nature that is through the atmosphere and mood of a certain place. Places also have their 'nature', which I described city have having vibrant colours embodying the different feelings of mood you get when you set foot on urban areas. This artwork also helped me developed my idea through the different meanings behind a certain piece, where the nature of people in the cities are diverse as it is the driving factor for them to survive in that place. Thus, the colourful abstract strokes represents the energy cities around the world permeates.

FINAL WORK

A-Level Art - Final artwork, Oil on canvas

Final outcome after revising through all my understanding of nature. This artwork is made to portray the definition and interpretation of nature, whereby it holds great sense of explanation and correlated to living things, personality, mood and atmosphere. In this piece, the main subject is a Bajau boy, from the tribe of Bajau or also known as sea gypsies. He is surrounded by the vibrant lights and energy of the city, contrasting to its lifestyle. However, the drive for survival is what keeps him striving to live in the concrete jungle. This work also have a personal connection to me as I have to self-taught to myself about art and the techniques most of the time since it is my first ever proper project development. It is the nature embedded to us humans; to survive.
